Welcome to the CICSA blog, a leading Engineering and Construction company in Guanacaste and the Northern Zone, where we combine innovation and experience to offer effective and sustainable solutions. In this article, we delve into the world of septic tanks, an essential component in modern wastewater management. Designed to safely treat and manage domestic wastewater, septic tanks are a vital solution for our homes and play a key role in protecting our natural environment.
Throughout this article, we will explore everything you need to know about septic tanks, from how they work and the different types available to installation tips, maintenance, and more. Join us on this journey to discover how these systems play a crucial role in maintaining public health and the environment.
What is a Septic Tank?
A septic tank is an underground system designed for the primary and secondary treatment of domestic wastewater. This system, though old, remains efficient and works through a simple biological process. In the septic tank, solid waste settles and gradually decomposes through the action of anaerobic bacteria, which are essential for treating contaminated water.

Along with the septic tank, it’s common for homes to have an infiltration trench or drain fields, ensuring a complete treatment process. Although these tanks are effective, it’s important to note that they should not discharge directly into water bodies without additional treatment, due to the remaining concentration of organic matter and other contaminants.
Permitted Septic Tanks

In Costa Rica, circular septic tanks, whether made of concrete or plastic, are commonly seen. However, since 2020, these have been prohibited under Decree No. 42075-S-MINAE. Only rectangular septic tanks are allowed, with a ratio of 1 width to 3 lengths. The minimum allowed width is 0.7 meters, with a length of 2.4 meters. Below, the image shows the required shape of a septic tank.
For any construction after 2020, installing a circular septic tank is an additional expense, as investment auditors in the case of loans or the responsible professionals themselves will require it to be replaced with a tank that meets the regulations. Otherwise, the project risks being halted.
Examples of Non-Compliant Septic Tanks

These images illustrate examples of septic tanks that have been discontinued in Costa Rica. The first shows a concrete septic tank during installation, whose circular shape no longer complies with current regulations.

El segundo es un tanque de plástico, también de forma circular, que a pesar de su ligereza y facilidad de instalación, ya no cumple con las especificaciones técnicas exigidas por la nueva normativa.
Types of Septic Tanks
Septic tanks are essential for the efficient treatment of domestic wastewater. There are several types, each suitable for different needs and environments:
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Septic Tanks
- Features: Durability and resistance, generally black in color.
- Capacity: Ranges from 500 liters to 7,000 liters.
- Lifespan: Approximately 45 years.
Concrete Septic Tanks

- Features: Built on-site, robust and durable.
- Suitable for: Areas with easy construction access.
- Advantages: High capacity, ideal for large installations or communities.
Fiberglass Septic Tanks

- Features: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant.
- Suitable for: Areas with difficult access or unstable soil conditions.
- Advantages: Easy installation and transport.
Complementary Systems
- Grease Trap: Prevents grease from entering the septic tank, reducing odors.
- Drain Field: Filters liquids through stone, gravel, and sand before reaching the soil.
- Inspection Chamber: Allows for system inspection and maintenance.
- Siphon: Has a U-shape that maintains a layer of liquid, which acts as an odor seal.
Septic Tank Cleaning
Proper cleaning of septic tanks is crucial for their efficiency and longevity. Here are some key recommendations:
Sludge Removal
- Frequency: Sludge should be removed periodically to prevent overflow and maintain system efficiency. It is recommended to clean the tank at least every 2 years.
- Process: Cleaning can be done manually or mechanically.
Safety Precautions
- Inspections: Never use flammable objects like matches or torches during inspection due to the risk of methane gas and explosion.
- After Cleaning: It is not recommended to disinfect the pit after sludge removal.

In conclusion, at CICSA, we understand the importance of an efficient and well-maintained septic tank system. These systems not only play a crucial role in sustainable wastewater management but also contribute to protecting public health and the environment. Choosing the right type of septic tank and maintaining it properly ensures effective wastewater treatment and minimizes environmental impact.
